The Laboratory of Electrochemistry and corrosion deals with the study of the metal (semiconductor) / electrolyte interface. The research work aims at establishing the structure of the double layer and at elucidating the mechanism of the electrode reactions. The main topics of interest are electrochemical energy conversion, organic electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, electroanalysis and environmental electrochemistry.
Different chemically modified electrodes are currently under investigations, including semiconductor metal oxides and organic polymers. Conducting polymers are currently in the forefront of emerging technologies. Applications of these materials as well as the new developed one will lead to an increasing role for these systems. The utility of conducting polymers is demonstrated by the various tasks in which they are employed. Especially attention is paid regarding electrochemically behaviour of different porphyrinic and azulenic compounds. These polymeric films can be used to develop new sensors for monitoring and control of environmental pollution.
The mechanism of corrosion and passivation processes is also a matter of concern. Promissing results were obtained in the study of stainless steels, and nickel, aluminium and lead alloys in various corrosive media. Recently, the electrochemical behaviour of some alloys was investigated in order to assess their possible use as biomaterials. The susceptibility of some alloys to several forms of corrosion (pitting, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking) is studied by specific methods. New types of corrosion inhibitors are under investigation with the purpose of establishing the effect of the chemical structure on the inhibiting properties. The laboratory is also involved in the electrochemical characterization of anodes for cathodic protection. Attension is given to corrosion protection by organic coatings. In this respect, the correlation between the chemical films composition and metallic substate corrosion was established.
