Research Activities top

Laboratory of molten salts (Dr. N. Ene) is specialized in obtaining physico-chemical data (phase diagrams, density, viscosity, electrical conductivity), in order to characterize various molten salts systems and to elucidate the mechanisms of processes involved in their practical applications. The basic and applied problems related to electrochemistry of light and refractory metals and electrosynthesis of special materials are studied. The environmental protection concerning waste inertization and recycling of valuable materials is now in progress.Heat storage and heat transfer in molten salts related to their utilization in non-conventional energy sources are also investigated. Studies devoted to biocompatible vitroceram -metal systems for implantology applications are now in progress too.
The activity of the Molten State Laboratory is developed in the frame of the "Physical Chemistry of Molten Salts and electrochemical fundamentals of industrial processes involving the molten salts use".

The program is divided in two projects:

1. Electrochemistry in molten salt systems, devoted to fundamental studies of some electrochemical processes in molten salts.
* Investigation of the redox chemistry and electrodeposition of metals with high affinity for oxygen and water, such titanium, hafnium, molybdenum and tungsten, in different alkali halide melts, such LiCl - KCl, NaF - LiF - KF, by linear and cyclic voltammetry and stationary techniques;
* Investigation of the complex chemistry of refractory metals and boron in general and especially the effect of fluoride ion and the atomic ratio Me/B and F/Cl/O in electrosynthesis of refractory boride;
* Fundamental and applied study in used voltammetry in molten salt electrochemistry; simulation of the electrochemical process and correlation between the experimental data and the physico - chemical models;
* Study of the electrocrystallization process associated with electrodeposition of refractory metals and refractory boride;
* Fundamental and applied study in electrometallurgy and electro-deposition of some earth metal (Ce, Nd, Dy) in molten electrolyte;
* Study of inert anode (based on oxides) in electrodeposition of aluminum; electrode process, kinetics and current efficiency.

2. The molten salts structure and their physico-chemical properties, devoted to studies in:
* Physical chemistry of molten salts:
* electrical conductivity, chemical and mechanical stability characterization of molten salts and oxidic materials,
* structural investigations using IR and Raman spectroscopy, NMR, X ray diffraction in molten salts and vitreous oxides,
* phase diagrams,
* Environmental protection
* Heat storage of solar and residual industrial energy in phase change materials.
* Seasonal chemical storage in methanol using absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere in hollow fibers, oxidative degradation of organic wastes in molten carbonates.
* Vitrification of industrial wastes and physico-chemical characterization of materials obtained.

Chemical stability tests for the obtained glasses and electrical conductivity measurements in molten state as tools for evaluating their quality.
* Modeling of electrical conductivity in molten salts and multicomponent oxidic glasses.
* Correlation between composition-structure-thermal history of glasses, mainly containing heavy metals.
* Crystallization tendency evaluated by DTA measurements and a mathematical model concerning the crystallization kinetics is in progress.
* Biocompatible vitroceramic-metal systems for implantology applications:
* Characterization of the obtained systems.
* Interface phenomena and diffusion processes in the solid state.
* Hardening of metallic surfaces by diffusion processes with and without reaction.
